What is an Americano? “Cafe Americano” is Italian for “American coffee”. It consists of espresso that is diluted with hot or cold water. The drink originated during World War ll when American soldiers were in Europe and would dilute espresso with water to get the brewed coffee flavor that they were more accustomed to. Americanos are served in nearly every coffee shop today.
A well made Americano will have some crema from the espresso floating on top. Crema is a tan layer of aromatic froth that floats on top of the espresso shot. It is created when the pressure of the espresso machine meets the oils of finely ground coffee. A good layer of crema indicates high quality espresso. When crafting an Americano, a small espresso shot transforms into a larger cup of coffee similar to drip coffee, while maintaining the smooth velvety flavor of espresso. The Americano is a wonderful way to enjoy the smoothness of espresso while still enjoying a drip brewed consistency. Drop by Lincoln Road Roastery anytime and try one for yourself!
